Understanding DUI Risk Classifications: What You Need to Know
Once you’ve been evaluated and assigned a risk level, you’re ready to start classes. Individuals must complete all recommendations in order to be compliant with court and regain driving privileges should driving privileges become revoked.
When it comes to DUI offenses, courts often require individuals to complete a certain number of hours of education, early intervention, treatment, and continuing care to help prevent future offenses. The number of required hours typically depends on the individual’s DUI risk classification, which can range from minimal to high risk.

Minimal Risk:
Individuals with a minimal risk level are typically required to complete 10 hours of risk education, which is usually divided into 4 classes. This level of intervention is intended to provide individuals with basic education and awareness about the risks and consequences of DUI.
Moderate Risk:
Individuals with a moderate risk level are typically required to complete 10 hours of risk education, as well as an additional 12 hours of early intervention, which is usually divided into 4 sessions. Early intervention involves a more in-depth examination of the individual’s behavior and risk factors, and may include counseling or other types of support.
Significant Risk:
Individuals with a significant risk level are typically required to complete 10 hours of risk education, as well as an additional 20 hours of treatment, which is usually divided into 7 sessions. Treatment involves more intensive counseling and support to help individuals address underlying issues that may have contributed to their DUI offense. This level of intervention may also include ongoing care for up to 6 months.
High Risk:
Individuals with a high risk level are typically required to complete 75 hours of treatment, which is usually divided into 25 sessions. This level of intervention is designed to provide comprehensive counseling and support to help individuals address serious issues related to substance abuse or addiction. Ongoing care for up to 12 months may also be required.
Overall, the level of intervention required for DUI offenses depends on the individual’s risk level, and is intended to provide the necessary education, counseling, and support to help prevent future offenses and promote safe driving behaviors.
